Sunday 9/28 almost home

Nothing picture worthy today as we made our way from New York to Ohio. Staying just outside of Toledo. Home tomorrow 👍

Saturday 9/27, Back through NH & VT

Image
Today we took the scenic route through the rolling hills of New Hampshire and Vermont on our way to Verona NY which is just east of Syracuse. The landscapes were beautiful.                                          A beautiful Catholic church we passed by in Bennington VT.

Friday 9/26, Heading home

Image
After all of the storms last night it was a pleasant surprise to wake up to blue skies and warmer temps. Rob made a quick run to the local seafood shop to purchase our dinners for the next 2 nights; oysters and mussels. It was a beautiful drive today as we headed south to North Hampton NH. The colors are beautiful and I anticipate they will only get better. After getting set up, we took a ride and had luch at a local brewery and then drove along the coast. My trip was made complete as I had a chance to dip my feet into the Atlantic Ocean 😁.                                               Tonight's dinner; and we schucked them ourselves!

Thursday 9/25 - Bar Harbor day

Image
The forecast for today is rain so we headed to Bar Harbor early to meander through the streets and support their local economy 😂. After a successful morning of shopping we had lunch just as the rain was starting. We quickly headed for home with a few quick stops to reprovision.                                                                Typical Lobster shacks in and around Bar Harbor

Wednesday 9/24 - Camden Bay

Image
Today we traveled along the coast down to Camden Bay, a picturesque harbor town that we visited years ago when we sailed on the Mary Day Schooner. Unfortunately it was not in the harbor today. We meandered around town for a while and enjoyed lunch along the harbor. We also stopped for a quick look at Fort Knox on the way. As you can see by the pictures, the skies were pretty grey today, but no rain.                                                                     Camden Harbor                                                         The Penobscott Narrows Bridge                                 ...

Tuesday 9/23- Mount Desert Island & Acadia Natioanl Park

Image
Today was a beautiful 105 mile trip around Mt Desert Island & Acadia. We started out heading counterclockwise around the western side of the island making our way up the eastern side to Bar Harbor and then on to Acadia. The views were spectacular, finally seeing what I had envisioned this part of Maine to be; rocky cliffs and fishing villages. The day started out much sunnier than we had expected but by the time we were heading up Cadillac Mtn the skies were getting grayer and our day ended getting sprinkled on.  Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse- I discovered that every lighthouse has it's own color signal somewhat like the morse code so that ships can identify where they are.                                                               Southwest Harbor  Thunder hole - the waves come crashing in sometimes reaching heights of...

Monday 9/22 - The Bold Coast scenic byway

Image
Today we traveled up the "Bold Coast scenic byway" northeast to the town of Eastport. We walked around this historic fishing port and stopped for lunch, had our first lobster roll.  We then headed back total miles 270.

Sunday - 9/21 Moving closer to Bar Harbor

Image
We packed up this morning and drove 90 miles to our campground just outside of Bar Harbor. The day was pretty uneventful albeit getting lots of happy birthday wishes from friends and chatting with family. And of course tonight we went out for a lobster dinner.

Saturday 9/20 - The Edge of Wilderness loop

Image
This morning we awoke to cold temps (31 degrees). After the sun got high enough to warm things up a bit we headed north toward the Canadian border. This was probably our least favorite ride due to the cooler temperature (mid 60's) and a strong wind from the north west. We made our way to a town called Jackman and actually found a nice place to thaw poiut and have lunch, (Smokin Barrels), otherwise there is nothing up here but what I would guess are hunting cabins. Can't imagine why anyone would want to live this far north and remotely. The view from our campsite this morning.   The colors were beautiful today They do like their birdhouses!   227 + miles (I added a few more miles onto our trip as my map reading skills still need improvement. 😩

Friday, 9/19 On to Skowhegan Maine

Image
Today was pretty uneventful. We packed up and headed to our next destination; Skowhegan Maine. We have a lovely campsite situated on the river.  After getting set up we drove into the town of Skowhegan for a delicious lunch of haddock chowder & haddock bites. The town is old and charming, they even put bird houses on their street posts 😊 "Someplace kind of wonderful Skow".  Some interesting sculptures around town The 62 ft high Skowhegan Indian erected in 1969 is in need of repairs, so it was recently sold for $1.00, the new owner plans to repair it.

Thursday 9/18 - The Western Notches Loop

Image
Today most of our travels were through the White Mountain Forest which boasts "some of the most dramatic mountain scenery of the northeast". We traveled through several 'Notches' or what most would refer to as passes. The early settlers called them notches because the steep, rugged granite cuts reminded them of the type of notch made by a woodman's axe. Our first stop was at the Mt Washington Hotel, an elaborate wooden hotel built in the early 1900's.    We traveled along the Kancamagus highway stopping at the Rocky Gorge. From there we traveled along Bear Notch Rd., a beautiful tree lined untrafficked road. Traveling through the Franconia notch, we stopped and hiked out to the Flume gorge. the waterfalls are not as impressive this time of year as most of the rivers are pretty dry, but the scenery is still beautiful.                                             ...
