Thursday 9/18 - The Western Notches Loop

Today most of our travels were through the White Mountain Forest which boasts "some of the most dramatic mountain scenery of the northeast". We traveled through several 'Notches' or what most would refer to as passes. The early settlers called them notches because the steep, rugged granite cuts reminded them of the type of notch made by a woodman's axe. Our first stop was at the Mt Washington Hotel, an elaborate wooden hotel built in the early 1900's.

We traveled along the Kancamagus highway stopping at the Rocky Gorge. From there we traveled along Bear Notch Rd., a beautiful tree lined untrafficked road. Traveling through the Franconia notch, we stopped and hiked out to the Flume gorge. the waterfalls are not as impressive this time of year as most of the rivers are pretty dry, but the scenery is still beautiful.

The Brick Store - Oldest operating general store in America (apparently closed on Thursdays)

The sign above the bridge says "ONE DOLLAR FINE to drive any team faster than a walk on this bridge"

We eventually made our way back to the  Campground - 217 miles today.
