Monday 9/15 - The Northeast Kingdom Loop
Today was a 215 mile ride through more beautiful rolling hills and small towns. Our first stop was in St.Johnsbury where we found a great bakery for our '2nd breakfast'- croissants and a cappuccino. We then traveled along the shore of Lake Willoughby. We stopped at the Maple Grove Farms of Vermont - the largest maple sugar candy factory in the world. We then followed the Connecticut river (which borders the state of New Hampshire north to the charming village of Island pond. Our most northern destination was the town of Derby Line and the Haskell Free library. and Opera house Unfortunately it was closed today. It was founded in 1901 and straddles the Canada-US border. You can actually read a book in the library sitting in the US with your feet in Canada.
Our first covered bridge citing Traveling along the shore of Lake WilloughbyLook closely and you can see the black tape on the floor that designates the border between countries. There is a sign outside that states "Haskell library card holders only. All others will be arrested and face prosecution and or removal from the United States".
